Jordanian Arabic

Jordanian Arabic

Jordanian Arabic is a dialect of Arabic language originated in Jordan. The current Jordanian Arabic is a mix of Bedouin and Palestinian dialects, with some new terms and ways of speech added by the current Jordanian citizens.

Types of Jordanian Arabic

There are several types of Jordanian Arabic, the reason being the huge number of refugees emigrating to Jordan, mostly from Palestine and Iraq. The major types are:

Native Jordanian

Native Jordanian is mostly spoken by residents of Jordanian descent, which is very similar to the mainstream Jordanian Arabic, with several Bedouin terms and a minority of different ways of speech, such as saying "Metraga", instead of "Metraqa" (which means "hammer"), unlike Emigrant Jordanians which spell it "Metra'a".

Emigrant Jordanian

Emigrant Jordanian is the sub-dialect used by mostly emigrants and their descendants from Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. It is very similar to Palestinian Arabic with several differences due to the emigrants' mixture with native Jordanians.

Iraqi Jordanian and other sub-dialects

There are several minor sub-dialects mostly used by emigrant Iraqi and Egyptian people. Iraqi Jordanian is almost identical to Iraqi Arabic, however Iraqis speaking it usually slower down their talking and add Jordanian Arabic terms and replace most of Iraqi Arabic terms with them. Egyptian Jordanian and such minorities are merely the same as the native dialect with some additions and subtractions using the mainstream Jordanian Arabic.
