Howie Johnson (drummer)

Howie Johnson (drummer)

Howie Johnson (born 1934, Seattle, Washington, died 1988) was the drummer for The Ventures from 1960-62.

Tenure with The Ventures

Replacing original studio drummer Skip Moore in 1960, Johnson joined as the permanent drummer, playing on the #8 UK/#2 US hit 'Walk Don't Run' and the #4 UK/Top 10 US hit 'Perfidia'. He was with the band for their first four albums.

Departure from The Ventures

In 1962, Johnson was injured in an auto crash, which caused irreversible spinal damage. On doctor's orders, he was forced to quit the band. He was replaced by drummer Mel Taylor, who remained with the band until his death in 1996.

Johnson died of a heart attack in 1988.
