* 1825 – George William Featherstonhaugh (pronounced "fen-shaw"), of Duanesburgh, New York, runs a newspaper notice announcing the formation of the Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road Company.
* 1872 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, building westward from Newton, Kansas, reaches the border between Kansas and Colorado.[Santa Fe Railroad (1945), "Along Your Way", Rand McNally, Chicago, Illinois.] ]
* 1879 – A storm destroys part of the Tay Rail Bridge in Scotland while a passenger train is traversing it; the event is commemorated in a poem by William McGonagall, "The Tay Bridge Disaster". 20th century
* 1906 – After his death, Alexander J. Cassatt is succeeded as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad by James McRea.
* 1917 – The United States federal government takes control of American railroads under the United States Railroad Administration for World War I.
