Extension to qualified majority voting under the Treaty of Lisbon

Extension to qualified majority voting under the Treaty of Lisbon

The Extension to qualified majority voting under the Treaty of Lisbon refers to the areas where decisions in the Council of the European Union under the Treaty of Nice required unanimity but where the Treaty of Lisbon allowed decisions under qualified majority (QMV).

The Lisbon Treaty also proposed a new formula to relax the calculation of a qualified majority which is described in Voting in the Council of the European Union#Treaty of Lisbon (proposed).

The EU has competence to make decisions only in those areas specified in the Treaties. Competence can be exclusive, joint with national governments, or supporting, with national governments having lead competence. The Lisbon Treaty added some new dimensions to the European Union, and these are also listed below where they involve QMV.

The areas of QMV are: [ [http://ec.europa.eu/ireland/lisbon_treaty/questions_and_answers/new_cases_of_qmv.pdf New cases of qualified majority voting (Council and European Council)] , "European Commission", accessed on 2008-06-17]
