- 19th Army (Soviet Union)
The 19th Army was a
field army of theSoviet Union 'sRed Army , formed in 1941 and active during theSecond World War .19th Army was included in the Second Strategic Echelon of the
Red Army . Its commander at first wasGeneral Lieutenant Ivan Konev . The Army was forming nearVitebsk and was formed fromZek political prisoners shortly released fromGULAG prisoner camps. 19th Army with 13th Army, 20th Army, 21st Army, and 22nd Army was stationed on line through Dzisna-Polotsk -Vitebsk-Orsha -River Dniepr -Lojev. Those Armies were defending "The Smolensk Gate" which was the shortest route to theUSSR 's capital. There mission was not to let the Germans to came near toMoscow . During the defence of Smolensk 19th Army was encircled together with16th Army and 22nd Army. Only elements of the Army fought their way out of the encirclement.Composition of 19th Army on 22 June 1944
