Pantophthalmidae is a family of very large spectacular rubust flies, commonly known Timber Flies. There are about 22 known species in the family, all are of Neotropical distribution. Superficially they resemble Horse Flies. Unusually for Diptera, the larvae feed by boring into living wood. The adult stage does not feed at all during there brief life.
