Tula State University (TSU) is the biggest state university in Central Russia. Since May 2006 the University staff has been working under the leadership of Rector Mikhail Vasilievich Gryazev, professor, doctor of technical sciences. Actively responding to the challenge of time the University dynamically develops and at the same time it remains loyal to its classical traditions. Nowadays more than 20 000 students, 400 post graduates, more than 600 foreign students from 30 countries study at Tula State University. The University consists of 9 faculties (colleges), a Medical Institute, a Center of Pre-University Studies, a Regional Center for Professional Development, and 73 departments (chairs).

Educational Process

At the regional educational market TSU offers a multi-stage training system, which covers a wide range of more than 150 study programs in defense industry, technology, mining construction, computer science, economics, law, humanities and medicine. There are more than 1200 faculty members, among them 278 full doctors (doctors of sciences), professors and 742 PhDs, associate professors. The total number of University staff is 2400 people.

TSU provides full-time and part-time education, distance education and education by correspondence.The University trains the following specialists: mathematicians, mechanics, physicists, chemists, psychologists, political scientists, historians, theologists, linguists, translators, lawyers, sociologists, physicians, specialists in physical culture and sports, designers and design engineers, economists, managers, architects, educationists and lecturers and other specialists of the highest qualification.

The Regional Center for Professional Development and Retraining of Administrative Workers and Specialists at Tula State University has more than 2400 students. The center offers study programs in general and additional training, thus this system enables the students to follow the main principle of modern education, i.e. lifelong education.

The University scientific library contains more than 1.5 million books. There are several reading halls, an Internet-room, an electronic library. The laboratory of computer technologies with the capacity of 100 has been recently put into operation. The scientific and technical potential of the Russian research institutes and constructing bureaus are widely used in the educational process. Leading specialists of the major regional enterprises which are very famous in the defense industry cooperate with the University. A lot of electronic text-books and virtual laboratory projects have been created by the faculty members and students of Tula State University. Testing has been introduced at all the stages of students’ knowledge control.

TSU has been awarded with diplomas of national and international competitions and exhibitions for its activity in the sphere of training, re-training and professional development, scientific work and achievements in the sphere of social activity. In 2005 the University was awarded with the Certificate of Honor by the President of the Russian Federation for its contribution to the education of highly qualified specialists and development of science. In 2007 TSU received the RF Government Award for Education. The University staff headed by the rector Mikhail Vasilievich Gryazev received a State Award for the project «Regional University Educational and Pedagogical Complex of Innovative Educational Technologies Used in Training Specialists for High-technological Production in Defense Industry». The director of the Medical Institute Alexander Agubechirovich Khadartsev received a State Award for the scientific research «The Use of Neuron Network Technologies in Educational Process».

The University pays great attention to scientific work which includes researches supported through various grants, researched carried out in accordance with the economic contracts, preparation of specialists of higher qualification (post graduate studies), cooperation with institutes and scientific centers of the Russian Academy of Science, patent and license activity, organization of and participation in various conferences and exhibitions, organization of students’ scientific work, publication of monographs and other scientific publications. The scientific activity has a great influence on the quality of education provided at he University and it is one of the indexes of the scientific performance of the University departments and chairs. There are 10 Doctorial Dissertation Council and 4 PhD Dissertation Councils which totally cover 35 specialties. 12-15 doctorial students and 75-85 PhD students annually defend their dissertations at Tula State University.

International Activity

Collaboration with international educational establishments, organizations and research centers is also of great importance at Tula State University. The University has both scientific and educational connections with universities and colleges of more than 20 countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, China, Poland.

ocial Activity

Social activity is one of the priorities of TSU. The University has the widest net of dormitories in the region. TSU possesses several sports facilities, a polyclinic, a health resort, a canteen. TSU is the only university in the country which has its own kindergarten. The Center of Professional Orientation helps students with their future careers. Various social organizations such as a students’ club and different sports clubs are active at the University. There is a University museum and a geological museum at TSU. The University regularly issues its own newspaper.About 600 students actively participate in the activities of 19 creative unions, service clubs and courses. The students’ club possesses 2 audience halls for 1226 and 200 seats respectively, the rehearsal room covers more than 500 sq meters.

In recent years the students and the faculty members of TSU have won two silver and one bronze Olympic medals, gained 25 prizes at World championships and contests, 19 prizes at European championships and contests, 364 prizes at championships and contests held in Russia. Three sportsmen have been awarded the title of honored master of sports. 11 World-class athletes and 49 masters of sports of the Russian Federation have been trained at the University. The Students’ Olympics is held annually at the University.

Graduates

A TSU graduate has a great potential to start a successful professional career. The University is rightfully proud of its graduates. Among the University graduates are those who works as heads of ministries, governmental bodies; those who were awarded honorary titles of Heroes of Socialist Labor and Heroes of Russia: those who were the deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and are the deputies of the State Duma and members of the Council of Federation; those who became winners of Lenin prizes and State prizes, members of the Russian Academy of Science, thousands of doctors of science, managers of industrial, scientific, constructing enterprises, educational institutions, law-enforcement bodies, famous constructors, active scientists, people of culture and arts. In general more than 100 thousands of our highly qualified graduates work in various branches of industry both in Russia and all over the world.

Today Tula State University is one of the leading Universities of the country. It is the scientific, educational and cultural center of the region. It ranks among 12-18 best classical universities in Russia. According to the estimation of graduates’ employment, presented by the All-Russian Public Association “Business Russia” together with the All-Russian Center of Public Opinion Studies, TSU is listed in the higher alfa-league with 15 more Universities (mostly of Moscow and Saint Petersburg).
