Governors of Plantations Act 1698

Governors of Plantations Act 1698

The Governors of Plantations Act 1698 or "An Act to punish Governors of Plantations in this Kingdom for crimes by them committed in the Plantations" was an English Act of Parliament passed in the reign of William III of England. [11 Will 3., c. 12]

It is the earliest English or British legislation by which Crown servants, including diplomats and governors, could be punished under English law for offences committed abroad.cite web|url=http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=nnm4omLAv5kC&pg=PA209&lpg=PA209&dq=%22Criminal+Jurisdiction+Act+1802%22&source=web&ots=i4VKsQpJ5Y&sig=eBR4q6q0x1qhccPFcIG4-XpeVg8&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result#PPA209,M1|title=Jurisdiction and the Ambit of the Criminal Law By Michael Hirst|accessdate=2008-06-15] A notable prosecution under the Act was in the case of "R v. Wall" [(1802) 28 St Tr 51.] in which Joseph Wall, the former governor of Gorée, was hanged for causing the death of a soldier following an illegal flogging 20 years previously.

The Act was repealed in 1995 by the Statue Law (Repeals Act) 1995.
