The Columbia Gorge casino is a
casino proposed by theConfederated Tribes of Warm Springs , a group of Indian tribes in theU.S. state ofOregon . They have sought to build a casino in theColumbia River Gorge since at least 1999. Current plans call for a convert|60|acre|0|adj=on facility with 250 hotel rooms in the city ofCascade Locks, Oregon .The plan, which has been endorsed by Oregon Governor
Ted Kulongoski , the City of Cascade Locks, and the government of Hood River County, must be approved by the U.S.Bureau of Indian Affairs , a department of theUnited States Department of the Interior , and would be the firstoff-reservation casino in the state. cite news

John Kitzhaber opposed plans for a casino in Cascade Locks, and the issue overshadowed the 2002 gubernatorial election ofTed Kulongoski . The tribes made record political contributions during that election. Kulongoski, who took no position on the issue during the election, received $40,000 for his campaign from Indian tribes.
