- Worthington State Forest
6,421 acre (26 km²) Worthington State Forest runs more than seven miles (10 km) along the
Kittatinny Ridge in Columbia, in Warren County, on theNew Jersey side of theDelaware River , just north of theDelaware Water Gap in theDelaware Water Gap National Recreation Area . The park offershiking ,camping (including a hike-in, primitive area) andcanoeing andkayaking on the Delaware. There are some twenty miles ofhiking trails within the park, including seven miles of theAppalachian Trail (AT), which passes through the park. The park is operated and maintained by theNew Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry .The forest includes the 1,085 acre (4.4 km²) Dunnfield Creek Natural Area; the creek is designated a "Wild
Trout Stream". The Sunfish Pond Natural Area, at 258 acres (1.0 km²), is a glacial lake, surrounded by a chestnut oak forest reached by a steep and rocky climb along the AT.Mount Tammany , at 1527 feet (465 m), offers view of the Delaware Water Gap.The
Old Mine Road , one of the earliest roads in the area, runs along the Delaware; it was used for transporting copper and slate from nearby mines and quarries, and is believed to have originally been a Native American trail that saw use by fur traders and Dutch settlers.ee also
