refnum=73002166Riversdale is one of the last of a series of five-part Georgia style mansions in
Maryland . Also known as Baltimore House or Riversdale Mansion, it is located inRiverdale, Maryland and was designated aNational Historic Landmark in 1997. While its design has been attributed toWilliam Thornton , this is not supported by available evidence on Thornton's career [cite web|url=http://www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/nr/NRDetail.aspx?HDID=158&FROM=NRNHLList.aspx|title=Maryland Historical Trust|date=2008-06-12|work= National Register of Historic Places:Properties in Prince George's County|publisher=Maryland Historical Trust] .Riversdale was built for Belgian émigré Henri Joseph the Baron de Steir, who lived in the
Brice House inAnnapolis, Maryland immediately prior to building Riversdale. de Steir planned the house in 1801 to resemble his Belgian residence, the Chateau du Mick. Four years later, de Steir returned toBelgium , leaving Riversdale in the hands of his son-in-law, George Calvert, a descendant of the Lords Baltimore. Calvert's son,Charles Benedict Calvert , established theMaryland Agricultural College on part of the Riversdale property, which eventually became the University of Maryland. It was declared a
National Historic Landmark in 1997.Note: A National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination document should be available upon request from the National Park Service for this site, but it appears not to be available on-line from the [http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/natreghome.do?searchtype=natreghome NPS Focus search site] .]Gallery
