The suburb is located in the inner western suburbs ofAdelaide around 3kilometre s west of the Central business district. Much of the suburb is residential but there are commercial areas along Richmond and South Roads. It is bordered byHilton ,Cowandilla ,West Richmond ,Marleston &Mile End South .History
Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s with land used mainly for farming. Residential and industrial growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Expansion continued in the interwar period. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased marginally between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
It was named after the first farm that was establised in the area in
1839 , owned by Charles Gooch. A subdivision on1842 of the surrounding area was called "The Village of Richmond".It is bordered by
South Road to theeast , Richmond Road to thesouth , Marion Road to thewest , and Craig Street/Davenport Terrace for the northern border.The population as at the 2006 Australian census was 2,687. [ABS 2006 Census]
The suburb has the home ground of
SANFL teamWest Adelaide Football Club (formerly known as Richmond Oval).Richmond is ideally located just minutes from the city, the
Adelaide Showgrounds andAdelaide Airport .In 2008 Richmond was listed as Adelaide's most 'livable suburb'. Recent redevelopment in the area will ensure that it will most likely continue to live up to this reputation.
