History

The original spelling of the name is: Dænes. The change occurred at Ellis Island, New York, New York in the late 19th century. The spelling of the name as far back as the early 18th century and continuing to the present is Djernes or Djernæs, as documented in Danish parish and census records, particularly from Thisted. The branches of the family that immigrated to Nebraska and to New York state entered the country as Djernes and carried that spelling on to the present.

This spelling of the name is quite widespread throughout the United States and Denmark.
