next_route=124Interstate 124 (I-124) is an unsigned designation for a short segment of a 4-lane limited access highway located in
Chattanooga ,Tennessee , USA. During periods where this two miles (3.22 km) long segment ofU.S. Highway 27 has been signed as I-124, it has served as aspur route ofInterstate 24 to downtown Chattanooga. The road segment has not been signed as I-124 for several years (it is marked on overhead signs and mile markers asU.S. Highway 27 ), and the Tennessee DOT official map no longer designates it as I-124, but some DOT publications still make reference to the designation. [Tennessee Department of Transportation , [http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/roadprojects/2007/ Fiscal Years 2008-2010 Transportation Improvement Program] ,May 1 ,2007 ] The US 27 freeway diverges from I-24 just before the Moccasain Bend in theTennessee River , continues North through downtownChattanooga , and then across theTennessee River as a limited-access freeway on theP.R. Olgiati Bridge . The river is the point at which the I-124 designation traditionally ended. After crossing the river, the freeway continues under the US 27 designation for another 30 miles (beyond which the spur continues under the TN 111 designation for a further 20 miles).Other extremely short "stub" Interstates occur in many downtown areas around the country to help traffic flow both through and into the cities.
