- Trans Ocean Airways
Trans Ocean Airways was a charter and cargo airline based in
Louisiana that operated from 1979 until 1990. (It is not to be confused with Transocean Airlines that operated in the 1940s and 50s).Company History
TransOcean began its history as
Gulf Air Transport in 1979 working in the support of oil exploration companies with a single Convair CV-440. In 1981 aLockheed L-188 Electra was added and later on Convair CV-580 Turboprops.Gulf Air Transport also operated charter flights to
Mexico and within the USA, specially weekend sports charters. With the increase in demand, a Boeing 727-200 was leased. In 1986 the name was changed to just Gulf Air and because of confusion with Oman-basedGulf Air the name was changed once again to Trans Ocean Airways in 1989.Due to a recession in the US Economy in the 1980s, Trans Ocean began to lose money and by 1989 it had to seek protection from its creditors by entering
Chapter 11 bankruptcy . But the airline could not make a profit and in March 1990 all operations ceased and the airline ceased to exist. [Airlines Remembered by BI Hengi, Publisher Midland Publishing]Fleet Details
