The Faculty of Science ( _es. Facultad de Ciencias) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is responsible for administering 5 Science based majors it has both Undergraduate and Graduate studies, some of the former in joint teaching with other faculties, most commonly the Faculty of Engineering. Is the most important exact science and natural science school in the entire country. And conjointly with the research institutes, it is consider one of the biggest research complex of the UNAM.

History

The history of this faculty is rather different from that of other schools that have their origins in former national schools; the study plan for this faculty was given in the Philosophy and Literature (UNAM)

It was until 1933 that the majors of Physics and Mathematics existed. The faculty was formerly localized in a small building between the Faculty of Engineering and Medicine.

Due to the increasing number of students the Faculty had to build a new Faculty, conveniently located among the research science institutes of Mathematics, Biology and Physics.

The Faculty has have a huge history among the Philosophy faculty as an activist one, during the 1999 strike, it was these two faculties the only ones that kept the strike longer than any other school.

Organization & Departments

The faculty is run by the Faculty dean, currently Ramon Peralta y Pabi.

Is divided in 3 main divisions:
*Biology:
** This area covers the bachelor degree in Biology, and currently researches over Evolutionary Biology, Compared Biology, Cell Biology and Ecology & Natural Resources

* Physics
** This area is in charge only og the Bachelor Degree of Physics, further research is done in the Physics Institute
* Mathematics
**This area currently holds 3 bachelor degrees, Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Actuary

Location and facilities

The Faculty is located in Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City, nearby the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Administration. Among the research institutes of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy

It consists in one complex and the biology students have their own set of buildings.

It has 1 complex called the Amoxcalli, which holds the library and the computer center.

Graduate programs

It holds Graduate programs for each of the divisions it has. It also hold some programs with other faculties and institutes all over the country. Most of the graduate programs even part of the faculty are run by the nearby institutes, like Physics, mathematics and IIMAS
