Features

Oracle SQL Developer supports Oracle products and a variety of third-party plugins which users may deploy to connect to non-Oracle databases. Oracle SQL Developer works with IBM DB2, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Sybase Adaptive Server, and Teradata databases.[1]

Oracle SQL Developer supports automatic tabs, code insight, bracket matching and syntax coloring for PL/SQL.

Oracle Corporation planned a re-written SQL worksheet (the code-editing element in SQL Developer) to debut with the 2.1 release.

As of the 1.5 release, Oracle SQL Developer employs the commercial SQL formatting API by Guido Thelen.

1.5.4, released in March 2009, is a translation release. Languages include Japanese, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. How the software chooses the wrong language remains a mystery. However, users can set a language manually by adding "AddVMOption -Duser.language=<one_of_the_supported_languages>" (without quotes) to <SQL_Developer_installation_directory>\bin\sqldeveloper.conf.

Components

Oracle SQL Developer product components include:

  • OWA (Oracle Web Agent or MOD_PLSQL), is an extension module for the Apache web server, and helps in setting up dynamic web-pages from PL/SQL within Oracle SQL Developer.[2]

Extensions

In addition to the extensions provided by Oracle, third-parties have written extensions to add new features and integrate with other products:[3]

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler operates with and models metadata.[4] Prior to SQL Developer version 3, it constituted a separate (but integrated) free[5] counterpart of SQL Developer. As of SQL Developer version 3 modeling has become an integrated part of the overall tool.
