The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life

The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life

The book The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life was published by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York in many languages. The announcement of the publication was made at the conclusion of the speech "The 'Good News' for a World Without False Religion" that was presented during the District Assemblies of Jehovah's Witnesses with the theme "Good News for all nations", carried out in several countries in 1968.

Remarkable world-wide circulation

In its 1990 edition, the "Guinness Book of Records" included this book under its heading "Highest Printings." The Guinness said that by May 1987 the "Truth" book had already reached the total number of 106,486,735 copies printed in 116 languages. ["Awake!" October 8, 1990, p. 28.] Since its launch until 1997, the book achieved a remarkable circulation of more than 107,000,000 copies in 117 languages."The Watchtower" January 15, 1997, p. 25.]

Purpose

From 1946 to 1968, Jehovah's Witnesses were using the book "Let God Be True" as the principal instrument of their free home Bible courses, being published in approximately 19,250,000 copies in 54 languages. This manual was replaced later by the "Truth" book, which had this comment at the second page: "Dedicated to God who is kind to anyone who seeks his true giver of life."

This instrument was designed to involve the Bible students so as to apply what they were learning. In the first three years of its circulation more than 400,000 people studied the book and were eventually baptized. ["Jehovah’s Witnesses—Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom" p. 105.]

The 192-page book had 22 chapters on topics such as "Why It Is Wise to Examine Your Religion," "Why We Grow Old and Die," "Where Are the Dead?" "Why Has God Permitted Wickedness Until Our Day?" "How to Identify the True Religion," and "Building a Happy Family Life." The book "Truth" was intended to encourage the students of the Bible to reason on the material considered and to apply it in their own lives.

Finally, in 1982, the book "You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth" became the main compendium used by the Jehovah's Witnesses to lead Bible studies. This was later replaced by the book "Knowledge That Leads to Everlasting Life" and more recently by the book "What Does the Bible Really Teach?", published in 2005.
