Southwestern Railways

Southwestern Railways (SWR), ( _uk. Південно-Західна залізниця) headquarted in Kyiv, is a composing part of Ukrzaliznytsia company. SWR's route map covers all railroads of Kyivska oblast, Zhytomyrska oblast, Chernihivska oblast, Vinnytska oblast, Khmelnytska oblast and Sumska oblast.

As of 2008, SWR opperates on 4668 km of track. 93,3% of SWR's railway roads are electrificated. SWR consist of five composing parts (directions). They are: Kyivska, Kozyatynska, Zhmerynska, Korostenska and Konotopska directions. There are 315 railway stations in SWR.

History

First railway road that was built in the Ukrainian part of Russian Empire was railway track Odesa -
Balta. It was 213 km length. It was built in 1865. This railroad connected agricultural regions of modern north part of Odeska oblast with Odesa, sea port in the coast of Black Sea. In 1870 Kyiv was connected with this railroad by Balta - Kyiv railway track. In this year Kyiv was also connected to Russian Empire's railroads by track Kyiv - Kursk. SWR began its history on the June 07, 1870, when this railroads were built. Kiev Passenger Railway Station, main railway station of SWR and Ukrzaliznytsia was built in this year too.

In 1871 - 1876 railroads Zhmerynka - Volochysk and Berdychiv - Shepetivka were built. In 1890 - 1897 railroads Zhmerynka - Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Kozyatyn - Uman, Khrystynivka - Shpola and Berdychiv - Zhytomyr were built. In 1897 Fastiv Railways were added to SWR. Volyn Railways were added to SWR in 1902. In this year railroad Kyiv - Korosten was built too. Before the World War One the total length of SWR was 3096 km.
