List of World War I aces from Canada
- List of World War I aces from Canada
This is a list of flying aces in World War I from Canada. A flying ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. Canadian served in the British flying services, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, as Canada had no air arm until the formation of the Canadian Air Force on September 19, 1918.
Different air services had different methods of assigning credit for kills. British pilots, often on offensive patrol many miles over the German lines, were not in a position to confirm that an apparently destroyed enemy aircraft had in fact crashed, so that victories were claimed as "driven down", "forced to land", or "out of control". The British Empire, after 1916, automatically awarded the Military Cross to a pilot with five air combats endorsed as "decisive" by the commanding officer of his squadron, although the term "ace" was never used officially by the British. The British also credited fractions of a kill to airmen if multiple airplanes shot down an enemy, resulting in the "fractional" scores (say "7½") of some British aces.
