Liverpool is one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom. Being an important centre of trade and commerce it has undergone an extensive redevelopement in recent years to coincide with Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture 2008.
Currently Beetham's West Tower holds the record of the tallest building in Liverpool at 140 m, however this record could soon be broken by the proposed King Edward Tower at 170 m, which would also become one of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom outside of London upon completion.
Other buildings to hold the title of Liverpool's tallest include famous landmarks such as the Royal Liver Building which held the title from 1911 until 1965 when the Radio City Tower took the title. Only to be deposed by the final completion of Liverpool Cathedral in 1978, which, at 101 m is one of the tallest churches in the world.
