Thomas H. Jackson (born
June 20 ,1950 ) was the ninth president of theUniversity of Rochester , preceded byDennis O'Brien . Jackson held the position of president from 1994 until he formally stepped down onJune 30, 2005 and was succeeded byJoel Seligman . Jackson's tenure was marked by the controversial "Renaissance Plan", which cut undergraduate enrollment while making admission more selective, and cut several graduate programs. He holds the position of Distinguished University Professor and has faculty appointments in the department ofpolitical science and in theWilliam E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at theUniversity of Rochester . Jackson is known as one of the nation's foremost experts on bankruptcy law.Jackson was vice president and provost of the
University of Virginia , following his appointment as dean of the School of Law. He has also been a professor of law atHarvard Law School (1986-1988) and served atStanford University (1977-1986).Jackson earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from
Yale University in 1975 and abachelor's degree fromWilliams College . He clerked forUnited States district court judgeMarvin E. Frankel andWilliam H. Rehnquist , then an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.References
