Saleem Ali (politician)

Mohamed Saleem Ali (till December 2007), Commonly referred to in the Maldives as Sto, Saleem, was Parliament member of Maldivian Democratic Party, elected for president in Huvadhu Atoll (one of the largest atolls in the world) with high popularity. Due to his criticism of the dictator, over the years he was arrested and sentenced several times. He Passed away in December 2007 in Sri Lanka. "A tireless campaigner for reform [Mr Saleem] will be indelible in the party's records as well as the country's history," it added. His son Ahmed Ghassan Saleem in age of 14 , was handcuffed and detained for three hours whilst he was walking to his school. "He was even late for his exams and he only went that way because he wanted to check the exam times from the notice board,this was don while Saleem was in jail for investigation for November 10th activity .

I was always impressed with Saleem's enthusiasm, dedication and hard work

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Saleem in our efforts to bring democracy to the Maldives and to bring an end to Gayoom's dictatorship in the Maldives.

Like many others, I was always impressed with Saleem's enthusiasm, dedication and hard work to promote the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and democratic reform in the Maldives.

Saleem's departure is a loss both to MDP and G.Dh Constituency. We will miss him dearly.
