Sañgay is an old town established in the late 17th century by the Spanish friars. Like the town of Lagonoy , Sañgay also formed part of the province of Albay but it was separated in the year 1846 as ordered by Governor General Narciso Claveria.
The parish of St. Andrew was founded in the same year that Sañgay gained its independence as a pueblo. The town's annual celebration of fiesta is held every November 30.
This town is blessed with several beautiful attractions from enchanting islands and beaches to mystery-filled caves. One of them is the Atulayan Island which is considered by writers as having a beautiful myth.
