Palena

Palena

Palena was the 3rd Mo'i of Maui. He was the titular chieftain or king of the island of Maui. He had control over portions of Western Maui and relied on the allegiance of the many district chiefs.

He was the son of Haho of Maui, by his wife Kauilaianapa, and the grandson of the Maui Paumakua. He succeeded his father as Moi of Maui. During the reign of Palena, like his father's, the district chiefs paid no heed to the their suzerain the Moi of Maui. Palena himself never did anything to turn this situation around.

His wife was Hikawainui. He fathered Hanalaa, whom both the chiefs of Maui and Hawaii contended for as their ancestor under the two varying names. This might assert that Palena was the father of twins who bore those names. His son Hanalaa succeeded him although it is not known which of the twins if their ever exist two twin Hanalaas.
