Head of the Church

Head of the Church

Head of the Church is a title given in the New Testament to Jesus. It is found for example in Colossians 1.18, Colossians 2.19, Ephesians 4.15 and Ephesians 5.23.

At the time of the English reformation, Henry VIII took for himself the title Supreme Head of the Church of England, which was theologically problematic; his daughter Elizabeth I changed this to Supreme Governor of the Church of England. In other traditions too, the metaphor of a "head" is sometimes found applied to a church leader, leading to occasional discussions of whether this is legitimate. For example, although it is not standard Catholic practice to refer to the Pope as the Head of the Church, this terminology is found in some Catholic literature, and fundamentalist Evangelical literature can be found which attacks this ferociously.
