coordinates=|The Bogambara Prison is a maximum security prison and is the second largest prison in Sri Lanka. Situated in the old city ofKandy in theCentral Province it was built in 1876 by the British colonial government under instructions of Inspector General Of Prisons and Police, N.R. Saunders. The oldest exciting building in world heritage city of Kandy is also inside the Bogambara Prison, and presently it is used as the Carpentry stores. Gallows were shifted from Hangman’s Hill to Bogambara in 1876. Bogambara Prison is considered to be a rich archaeological landmark, it is also believed the construction of the Bogambara Prison has been done similar to the that ofBastille . The prison is administrated by the Department of Prisons.Famous inmates
