History
It was founded in December 1977 by the Republican Party of Namibia with the first editor being Johannes Petrus Spies.[4] The paper was later supported by the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance, a merger of several parties. In 1991, Die Republikein was bought by the Democratic Media Holdings. After several disputes between DTA and DMH during the 1990s, the media house broke with the DTA in 1997 and aspires to increase editorial independence since.[1]

Language Policy
Die Republikein targets mainly the Afrikaans-speaking population in Namibia, including those who use the former offcial language as second language. As a pragmatic way to save recources and due to the multilingual situation, the newspaper has started to also publish English language news, especially when it comes to economic as well as African and international news.
