Edmundo Suarez

Edmundo Suarez

Biography

Edmundo Suarez Trabanco was a Spanish|español footballer and coach. He was born in Baracaldo. He played center-forward in the Valencia CF for most of his career except the last season in the CD Alcoyano

" World" is a symbol in the Valencia CF since he is the maximum historic scorer in league with this team achieving two trophies as top goal scorer. He is the fifth highest scoring player of the Spanish league, only surpassed by men of the size of Zarra, Alfredo I Gave Stéfano, Isidro Vagrant and Ferenc Puskás

He had a great physical strength and a strong will which allowed him to dominate the Spanish football area during the 1940s. Along with Epi, Amadeo, Asensi and Gorostiza he formed the electric front, that transformed to the Valencia CF in a winning team.

He played in various amateur teams in his native Basque Country, but the civil war changed his career completely. He was on record with the Athletic Club but as this acquisition was made in republican territory it was not considered valid by the pro-franco state which remained after the Spanish Civil war. In the year 1939 the pro-franco army created a team, the Recovery to Raise, taken from the one which formed from diverse players who had fought in military region to Raise. Said team was chosen by the Valencia CF to debut after the combat. The Valencia CF after seeing it in action done not waste the opportunity and acquired it.

After this over-elaborate acquisition, " World" remained in the Valencia during eleven seasons between 1939-40 and 1949-50. During his career, he was a consummate high-scoring player obtaining an average of 0'92 goals per game during his career in the Valencia CF. Thanks to this, he achieved the trophy Pichichi (top scoring player) in the seasons 1941-1942 and 1942-1943 with 27 and 28 goals respectively.

After a season in which he barely won 6 games, he decided to leave the club for which he had played all his career to join in the nearby and modest one CD Alcoyano which was also in the first division. There the season remained only 1950-1951 being of concern to an acceptable level.

Nevertheless, it was not his relation with the Valencia which ended his career. During the season 1963-1964 he took over coaching the team, replacing Pasieguito, another legend of valencianismo. Thanks to their strong character and inflexibility (they declared that they had lost parties for lack of value or that should renew completely the front) he went on to mend positions in the league, finishing in sixth place. The team's showing in the Cup of Fairs was a lot better, but lost against the Real Zaragoza in a contested match. After the good action of that year, the board of directors of the Valencia CF allowed him to coach for one more year but as the coach finished the league in fourth position, the directors hired another coach, Barinaga. The team did not improve under Barinaga, so World returned to his old position as coach the next season.

The season 1966-1967 began as the coach tied for the Cup of the King and lost in the end to the Athletic Club for 2-0. His career as the coach in the Valencia CF continued to the 13 of October of 1968 but was devastated by the team's poor performance.
