Action of 25 September 1806

This battle took place on 25 September 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars off Rochefort, Charente-Maritime between a British force of 6 battleships and a sloop (of which only 3 of the battleships were in action) and a French force of 5 frigates and 2 corvettes. Unusually for French ships of the period, the largest 4 frigates put up a tough fight, damaging the rigging of "Mars" in particular, before they were caught and captured. The remaining frigate and the 2 corvettes fled early on. "Infatigable" was renamed "Immortalité" and "Minerve" was renamed "Alceste" for British service. The ships involved were:
