Shinden Fudo Ryu

Shinden Fudo Ryu

Shinden Fudo Ryu is a school of dakentaijutsu and jutaijutsu/jujutsu. Shinden Fudo means "immovable teachings transmitted by the gods." Shinden Fudo Ryu has many body conditioning methods using items found in nature. Like nature, the forms and movements are natural and relaxed. The school also teaches Ono (a very large axe), Otsuchi (a very large hammer), and Odachi (a huge sword). [ [http://www.budotaijutsu.co.uk/budo_taijutsu/shinden_fudo_ryu.html Budotaijutsu] ]

History and Legend

The Ryu may have been founded in the middle of the 12th century by Genpachiro Temeyoshi according to the Bujinkan. [ [http://www.bujinkangreece.com/ryuha/shinden.html Bujinkan Greece] ] However, others claim it was founded by Izumo Kanja Yoshiteru. [ [http://www.budotaijutsu.co.uk/budo_taijutsu/shinden_fudo_ryu.html Budotaijutsu] ] Regradless of the exact founding, the Ryu had significant influence in the development of Japanese martial arts. For instance, in more modern times Kuki Takei from the Kuki family of Kukishin Ryu studied Shinden Fudo Ryu under Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu. Takenaka Tetsunoke, senior student of Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, was at one time a student at the Shinden Fudo Ryu dojo also lead by Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu.

In the year 1895, a British engineer named Edward William Barton-Wright and a Dutch anthropologist named Herman Ten Kate trained at a Shinden Fudo Ryu dojo in Kobe. Barton-Wright went to to incorporate aspects of Shinden Fudo Ryu into his eclectic martial art of Bartitsu.

The Bugei Ryuha Daijiten lists Masaaki Hatsumi as one of several individuals which either have Menkyo Kaiden or are Soke of branches of this Ryu. [ [http://www.budotaijutsu.co.uk/budo_taijutsu/shinden_fudo_ryu.html Budotaijutsu] ]
