Personality

Ranka is a lively and cheerful green-haired girl who is not tall for her age. She is noted to be somewhat naive. The adopted younger sister of SMS ace Ozma Lee, she attends a girl's high school at the urging of her brother while working part-time in the Chinese restaurant "Nyan-Nyan". Ranka is a huge fan of Sheryl Nome, and got tickets to her concert from her brother as a big favor. She loves singing since her childhood and dreams to become a singer. She is one-quarter Zentradi, which gives her the ability to have her hair move on its own according to her feelings, as well as having an above-average resistance to space vacuum. In episode 19, it is revealed that she is in love with Alto Saotome.

Fictional Biography

Ranka also suffers from dissociative amnesia following a "Vajra" attack on the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet when she was only 4 years old that led to the loss of her family along with nearly 1000 other people. She is one of a handful of survivors from that incident. One of her only memories from childhood is a song called "Aimo". Sheryl Nome, Ranka's idol, has recognized her talent in singing and encourages her to pursue her dreams.

Ranka's first step into becoming an idol happens when she was discovered by a talent manager while she was singing one of Sheryl's songs in the public. He briefly became her manager (until she was recruited by Leon Mishima). Her career started to soar when she was cast as Mao Nome during the production of a movie based on the events of "Macross Zero". Her first live show was scheduled to be performed in the Macross Frontier, but when Sheryl and Alto were captured by a discontented Zentraedi platoon in Galia 4, Ranka rushed to perform to the troops there to make them stop. The plan succeeded and she manages to rescue her friends. It appears her songs (voice) emit fold waves which the Vajra seemed to be able to "hear" even in the emptiness of space. Her songs disorient the Vajra, causing them to stop in their tracks, making it easier to destroy them.

Ranka becomes close friends with Alto Saotome after he saves her from a "Vajra" attack, and eventually falls for him, but this relationship proves to be troublesome as Sheryl also has feelings for him. Both unwillingly ended up competing for his attention and affections.

It is revealed that she has a deeper connection to the "Vajra", as she feels severe pain whenever large amounts of them are destroyed in her vicinity. The exact nature of this ability is revealed in the final episodes. Ranka Lee's mother, Ranshe Mei, was also a scientist in the 117th Long Distance Research Fleet and worked in Dr. Mao Nome's "Vajra" research team in 2047. Like Sheryl Nome, Ranshe was also infected with the "V-Type" infection due to exposure to the "Vajra" specimens while being pregnant. This caused her daughter Ranka to carry the infection permanently while being immune to its lethal effects. The "V-Type" infection itself is used by the "Vajra" as a fold comunication device that connects all the creatures to a collective intelligence, which Ranka apparently can access through her singing.

She is referred to as the "little queen" by Grace O'Connor, suggesting that Ranka's relation to the "Vajra" may be even more than it seems. In episode 21, she left the Macross Frontier Fleet (along with her bodyguard Brera Sterne) while trying to deliver her Vajra pet "Ai-Kun" to the rest of its species. She and Brera eventually find the "protoculture" planet where the "Vajra" originated, but she is captured by them just as she remembers her past and realizes that Brera is her real brother.

While being held on the "Vajra" planet, Ranka realized that everything that happened to the 117th research fleet was her fault due to her singing. Then Grace O'Connor managed to manipulate Ranka into leading all the "Vajra" forces against the attack of the "Macross Frontier" fleet during the final battle. However, Ranka eventually breaks free from Grace's influence and uses the "Vajra" to protect the "Frontier" fleet and stop Grace and the "Macross Galaxy" fleet attack. Ranka Lee also saved Sheryl's life by sending the "V-Type" microbes from her brain into her intestines, giving Sheryl the ability to link with the "Vajra" during the process.
