- Bellini duct carcinoma
Bellini duct carcinoma (BDC) is a rare type of kidney cancer that progresses and spreads very quickly. BDC starts in the Bellini duct of the kidney. BDC was only discovered recently because of advances in technology; until recently, it was commonly thought of as renal cell carcinomas. BDC is extremely rare, with only ten reported cases as of Feb. 1991, and it accounts for 0.4% to 2.6% of all
renal neoplasms .Discovery
BDC was thought to be renal cell carcinomas, until "recently developed techniques of
lectin histochemistry " helped forward knowledge of kidney duct cancers.cite journal |author=O Natsume, S Ozono, T Futami, and M Ohta |year=1997 |title=Bellini duct carcinoma: a case report |journal=Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology |volume=27 |issue=2 |pages=107–110 |publisher= |location= |doi=10.1093/jjco/27.2.107 |url=http://jjco.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/27/2/107 |accessdate=2008-06-03 |quotes=no]tudy
BDC is extremely rare, and thus hard to study. In a well documented case, a 56 year old man was found to have BDC. In November 1994, he was brought in to the clinical study for an examination of his left renal mass. The patient was not suffering from flank pain or gross
hematuria , common symptoms of urological disease. Through testing the patients disease was classified, and then underwent transperitoneal radical nephrectomy. His kidney was found to have a 43 mm (1.62 inches) tumor. Currently, very few published works compare histopathological and clinical data. Because of this, there is no standard protocol for diagnosis and treatment for the renal neoplasm. [Maestroni, Umberto . In a case with a 53 year old woman, the patient suffered from irregular fever, decreased weight loss and oneepisode of haematuria. [cite journal |author=K Pavithran, D Hazarika, D C Doval, R Kumar |year=2006 |title=Bellini Duct carcinoma - A Case Report |journal=Indian Journal of Medical & Paediatric Oncology |volume=27 |issue=1 |pages=38–41 |publisher= |location= |url=http://medind.nic.in/ias/t06/i1/iast06i1p38.pdf |format=PDF |accessdate=2008-06-03 |quotes=no] In her case, she suffered from the those symptoms, because the medication she was taking had no effect. In an extreme case, the patient died of BDC, after it metastasized in his lungs. [Kruπlin , Boæo . "COLLECTING DUCT CARCINOMA OF THE KIDNEY." Importance
In the conclusion of the case study mentioned above, the Nara Medical University of Japan, had this to say about BDC:
quote
In conclusion, BDC is a rare tumor with a clinically rapid and progressively malignant course. This makes it important to determine the origin of all renal tumors and to distinguish rare forms such as BDC from common types of renal cell carcinoma. Moreover, it is highly desirable that a modality of treatment be established for this malignancy.Notes
