ExxonMobil 's Baytown Refinery inBaytown, Texas is the largestoil refinery in theUnited States , with an input capacity of 557,000 barrels (88,600 m³) per day as ofJanuary 1 ,2005 [ [http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/rankings/refineries.htm http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/rankings/refineries.htm] ] . The site first opened in 1919 and was originally operated by the Humble Oil Company. Today, it is the largest employer in the city. The plant takes up 2400acre s (10 km²) of land next to theHouston Ship Channel .In 1988 and 1989, the plant expanded operations without notifying the
U.S. federal government as required under theClean Air Act 'snew source review provision. This went unnoticed by the Environmental Protection Agency until 2000.References
