History
Football is belived to have been introduced to Mexico by Cornish miners during the late 19th century. It fought with the national sport of bullfighting for popularity in its early years. Proffesionalism saw great playing standards introduced into the country in the 1950s. Mexico has hosted the world cup twice, in 1970 and again in 1986 a record they hold jointly with several other nations.
Because of the Mexican Revolution the country remained largely isolated from their northern neighbours the United States. This led to a different development of sports, and helped football flourish in Mexico whereas it stuggled in Canada and the US against basketball, gridiron, ice hockey and baseball.
