Jon Thorne

Jon Thorne (born 12 February 1967 in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire) is an English double bassist.

Born in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire he lived in Zimbabwe from the age of 6 to 11 and is now based in Whalley Range, Manchester. He started playing in his early twenties. He studied and played jazz for a number of years following and considers Danny Thompson his mentor. He has recorded with a wide variety of artists including: Robert Miles, Trilok Gurtu, Robert Fripp, Guy Barker, Iain Ballamy, Badly Drawn Boy, James Yorkston, Donovon, Cortina Deluxx, Kate Havnevik, Steve Tilston, Isobel Heyworth, Elaine Palmer, King Creosote, Lou Rhodes, Coco Rosie, Amos Lee, Martha Tilston, Oddur Runarsson and Lamb. Jon also plays internet chess with the Timperley based drummer Phil Bennett.

During the 8 year career of the successful group Lamb, Thorne acted as an unofficial third member with his most potent contribution on the group's second album "Fear of Fours". This album showcased his seamless and inspired integration of the double bass with modern electronica influences, with melodicism, groove and textural sensitivity. He often speaks about the spiritual and metaphysical aspects involved with playing and approaching an instrument.

He teaches privately, his most notable student so far has been John Parker from Nizlopi.His debut solo album "Manchester Road" was released in August 2006.
