Paarl ,Western Cape ,South Africa . Originally founded as a primary school, by Rev. van Lingen founded the school in the centre of town in 1858. The school boasts a considerable list of sporting achievements and has produced some ofSouth Africa 's top Rugby players includingSchalk Burger ,Jean De Villiers andDe Wet Barry .The primary school section of Gimnasium was founded in 1858, with the High School being founded much later. The school was established by Rev. Van Lingen as a dutch christian school for boys. In the mid 30's the school's language of education shifted to
Afrikaans . After the high school section was completed the school allowed the first female learner to enroll in 1971.Paarl Gimnasium High School is now one of
South Africa 's top sporting schools and takes part in the enormous interschools tournament againstPaarl Boys' High School (also a sporting and academic giant inSouth Africa and also situated inPaarl ) which attracts more than 30 000 spectators every year and which virtually grinds the town to a halt.2008 is known as it's "Festival Year" because the school is as of 2008 150 years old.
