footnotes =Ramachandra S. Hosamane (1944-) is a Senior Professor of Organic Chemistry at
University of Maryland, Baltimore County . Dr. Hosmane has over 150 peer-reviewed research publications in reputed international journals. He has 4 awarded US patents, three of which have been licensed to industries. His contributions to the field ofOrganic Chemistry andmedicinal chemistry are notable. He has trained well over 100 undergraduate students, 30 graduate students, and 20 postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists in his laboratory. His current research focus is on drug discovery for dual inhibition ofHCV andHIV as well as lung, breast, and prostate cancers.Early life
Mr. Ram Hosmane was born in
Gokarna ,Uttar Kannada ,India and completed high school fromBhadrakali High School, Gokarna . In 1966, he earned B.Sc Chemistry from Karnataka University,Dharwar , followed by M.Sc. degree inOrganic Chemistry from the same institution in 1968.Career
Mr. Hosmane moved to
USA in the early 70's to pursue a doctoral degree inorganic synthesis andmedicinal chemistry at theUniversity of South Florida , where he earnedM.S. (1976) andPh.D. (1978) degrees. After completing his postdoctoral training (1979-82) at theUniversity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign , Dr. Hosmane joinedUMBC as an Asst. Professor in the year 1982 and was promoted to Associate Professor with academic tenure in the year 1986. He was promoted to the rank of full Professor in the year 1994.His research work has been supported by ~ 50 grants by Federal & State agencies such as the
National Institutes of Health and the [http://www.mips.umd.edu/ Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS)] , and Private Foundations such as theAmerican Heart Association ,American Cancer Society , and [http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_TRANSITIONMAIN&node_id=631&use_sec=false&sec_url_var=region1 Petroleum Research Fund] as well as a variety of industrial sources. He has contributed significantly to the Development ofOrganic andMedicinal Chemistry.Mr. Hosmane was awarded [http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hosmane/Photo_Album/Maryland_Chemist_Award.html the Maryland Chemist of the Year Award] from
