Life

Mangal is an ethnic Pashtun Mangal, and has a degree in literature from Kabul University.

In the 1970s, he worked initially for the Soviet Interior Ministry in Afghanistan, and then joined the growing insurrection meant to quell the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

He served as head of the Committee that drafted Afghanistan's most recent Constitution.

In May 2008, while flying into Musa Qala with a British escort to dedicate a new mosque, his CH-47 helicoptor was hit by rocket fire. [cite news
