Sirmium Legionaries

Sirmium Legionaries is the oldest American football club in Serbia, founded in 2002 in Sremska Mitrovica, a small city near Belgrade. From the beginning, team was growing rapidly, becoming one of the most organized and successful clubs in region.

Home town of Legionaries, city of Sremska Mitrovica, previously Sirmium, is well known for history from Roman period, so club got its name Legionaries (they were brave and fearless roman soldiers).

During 2003 club was only playing friendly games. First National League of Serbia took place in 2004. Legionaries were third in regular season, reaching the playoffs, where they were beaten by Vukovi Beograd. Next year, National League wasn’t played, but National Cup was. Legionaries were third again, behind the Kragujevac Wild Boars and Vukovi Belgrade.

In 2006 club entered regional Southeastern European League of American Football, losing seven games and winning one game, in Slovenia. At the end of the season club won its first trophy – Crobowl in Zagreb, Croatia. Legionaries had beaten Ljubljana Silverhawks in semifinal and Trieste Mustangs in final of the tournament.

In 2007 team joined National Championship of Serbia. In that competition Legionaries were second in regular season, but losing semifinal playoff game against Klek Knights.
