George Herbert Westcott

George Herbert Westcott was the Bishop of Lucknow from 1910 until his death in 1928. A member of a very distinguished clerical family [His father Brooke Westcott was Bishop of Durham from 1890 until 1901; and his brother Foss Westcott was Metropolitan of India from 1919 until 1945] , he was born on April 18 1862 and educated at Marlborough College and Peterhouse, Cambridge ["Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] . He was ordained in 1886 and, after a brief period as Chaplain at his old school, emigrated to India where he worked as a missionary with the SPG. From 1898 he was Examining Chaplain to the inaugural Bishop of Lucknow [The Times, Thursday, Apr 20, 1893; pg. 12; Issue 33930; col C "Ecclesiastical Intelligence Colonial appointments"] who in time he succeeded [The Times, Monday, May 16, 1910; pg. 8; Issue 39273; col B "New Bishop Of Lucknow"] . He died in post on the 16 January 1928, his Times obituary noting his
