Charles John Godfrey Saunders

Charles John Godfrey Saunders was the Bishop of Lucknow from 1928 until 1938. He was born in 1888 and educated at Merchant Taylor's School and St John’s College, Oxford ["Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] . Ordained in 1912 he emigrated to India where he worked as a missionary with the SPG. From 1921 to 1925 he was Staff Chaplain at the Head Quarters of the Indian Army followed by another three years in a similar post serving the Metropolitan of Calcutta [During which time he wrote "Handbook for chaplains, India : a guide to the military, civil and ecclesiastical rules in force in India" (Calcutta, Indian Army, 1926)] before his elevation to the Episcopate. On returning to England he was Vicar of Uckfield ,and an Assistant Bishop within the Chichester Diocese ["Ecclesiastical News New Assistant Bishop For Chichester (Official Appointments and Notices)" The Times Friday, Feb 03, 1939; pg. 18; Issue 48220; col G] . His last post was an honorary one [As part of the hospital chaplaincy team, in which capacity he wrote "A History of the United Bristol Hospitals" (Bristol, Board of Governors of the United Bristol Hospitals1960)] in retirement at Bristol where he died on 16 October 1973.
