Rauceby Mental Hospital

Rauceby Mental Hospital

Rauceby Mental Hospital building was commenced in 1897 and was completed and opened in 1902. It is situated near Sleaford, Lincolnshire. It was originally called Kesteven County Asylum. The hospital closed in 1997, and stood unused until building work started on the site and its surrounding area, a project by David Wilson Homes. Following public consutation, the site and its surroundings (including Rauceby railway station) were officially renamed Greylees, although the developer continues to refer to the housing development as DeVessey Meadows/Orchard/woodlands (depends where on the site you are).

There are two graveyards, a mortuary and various tunnels connecting wards (under the corridors), none of which are shown on the original maps. Since it was abandoned in 1997, it has obtained a rather sinister look about it. Windows are smashed and there are plants growing everywhere [http://www.simoncornwell.com/urbex/frames.htm] . As one blogger puts it: 'no-one goes there, no-one leaves' [ [http://eppsie.webs.com/blog.htm www.freewebs.com/eppsie | ] ] .
