Elliott B. Strauss

Elliott Bowman Strauss (March 15, 1903 – August 19, 2003) was an American naval officer. The son of Joseph Strauss and Mary Sweitzer Strauss and grandson of Nelson Bowman Sweitzer, he was born in Washington, DC and attended the The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in 1923.

After a 30 year naval career, including serving as a key allied staff officer for the Invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944, Strauss continued serving the government in the Agency for International Development and Foreign Service Corps for another eight years.

His service to the NHF started in 1963 as its director, and continues to this day as chairman emeritus of the Board of Directors.

The NHF, collocated and partnered with the Naval Historical Center in the historic Washington Navy Yard, was founded in 1926 under the sponsorship of the Secretary of the Navy to address a concern for the preservation of naval history and traditions.

From its initial focus on safeguarding the material culture of the Navy, the NHF has developed into a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the full range of naval history. In addition to providing much needed support to the Navy’s historical programs and its flagship Navy Museum in Washington, D.C., the NHF collects oral histories of Navy veterans, publishes articles, and sponsors symposiums on important naval history topics. After leaving the Navy, Strauss went on to chair the board of the Naval Historical Foundation and to be a director at Bucknell University's school of engineering.

Strauss was married twice, to Lydia Archbold (whom he divorced) and Beatrice Phillips Strauss. He had three children with his first wife and one with his second. [ [http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/ebstrauss.htm Elliott Bowman Strauss, Rear Admiral, United States Navy ] ]
