Zimbabwean South Africans

Zimbabwean South Africans

Zimbabwean South Africans are South African residents and citizens of Zimbabwean origin. There are over 3 to 5 million Zimbabweans residing in South Africa, which is bordered by Zimbabwe to the north of Limpopo province. Most Zimbabweans reside in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, with a large demographic concentration in the more economically-advanced urban areas of Gauteng.

Recent emigration

The Zimbabwean community in South Africa spiked in numbers as the economic, political and social conditions in their home country deteriorated under the rule of president Robert Mugabe. Most of the recent migrations of Zimbabweans to South Africa have been undocumented, and thousands of Zimbabweans fear deportation from the country to less-than-tolerable conditions in their home country. In a similar state of affairs as illegal immigrants in other countries, Zimbabweans constitute a large portion of the agricultural labor force in the northern provinces.

However, the Zimbabwean South African community was one of the targets of nativist violence in South Africa during the 2008 riots, exacerbated by a rise in violent crime and poverty.
