Lyngby-Taarbæk (official spelling. The spelling Lyngby-Tårbæk is occasionally used) is a municipality (Danish, "kommune") in
Region Hovedstaden nearCopenhagen on the east coast of the island ofZealand ("Sjælland") in easternDenmark . The municipality covers an area of 39 km², and has a total population of 51,449 (2008). Its mayor is Rolf Svendsen, a member of the Conservative People's Party ("Det Konservative Folkeparti") political party.The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of
Kongens Lyngby . Other towns in the municipality areTaarbæk ,Virum ,Sorgenfri ,Lundtofte , Brede,Hjortekær andRådvad . To the east is the Øresund, which separates the island of Zealand fromSweden .Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality was not merged with other municipalities by
