Stanton Middle School is a public middle school located in Kent, Ohio, USA. It is the only middle school in the Kent City School District and serves the district's 810 students in grades 6-8. Located at the opposite end of the same campus that houses Theodore Roosevelt High School, it opened in 1999 as a replacement for the former Davey Middle School, which became an elementary school. The current principal is Tom Larkin, who has been at the school since 2007.

History

The Kent City School District first used the junior high concept in the fall of 1959 when Davey Junior High School opened at the building which had formerly housed Theodore Roosevelt High School. Originally, Davey served the district's seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. In 1980, ninth graders were moved to Roosevelt and for a short time Davey served just seventh and eighth graders before sixth-graders were sent to the school in 1986. [cite book |title= 1993-1994 Agenda Planner|author= Kent City Schools|year= 1993|publisher= ] Due to the size of the building, however, only students from two of the district's five elementary schools (Walls and Holden) were able to attend sixth grade at Davey, while the rest remained at their elementary schools. In 1993, the school was rededicated as Davey Middle School as the curriculum and structure were modified with the team-teaching concept. District leaders wanted a new school to not only house all the district's sixth graders together but to better fit the team-teaching structure being used. Campus

The school is located in northern Kent at the western edge of the 50 acre campus of Theodore Roosevelt High School. Previously, much of the current site had been a wooded area behind the district bus garage. Immediately adjacent to the school is the student and community weight room (housed in the former bus garage) and a small stadium, Stanton Stadium, which has a nine-lane all-weather track surrounding a field used for soccer and lacrosse. The campus also includes practice and playing fields for the various high school teams as well as a football stadium with an eight-lane all-weather track. Both high school and middle school teams utilize the facilities and practice fields.

Facilities

The building is mostly a one-story structure with a small second floor in the academic wings on the north side. It covers approximately 143,000 square feet and is designed to accommodate up to 1,200 students. The school itself is designed for use in the team-teaching method, so rather than wings of hallways lined with classrooms, there are "pods" or clusters of five classrooms each. There are nine "pods" in two wings on the northern side of the building which are connected by a central two-story media center adjacent to two art rooms. Each pod is designated with a specific color (green, blue, or purple), with one color per grade section. Within the individual pods are the "teams", which can have as many as six teachers and as few as two. The school is centered on the main entrance and the administrative offices. On the south end of the building are the co-curricular rooms for band, orchestra, and choir as well as the gymnasium and "auditeria".
