A unique feature of the Spirit of Gold is that membership in the marching band is open to all students enrolled at Vanderbilt or any students from colleges in the Nashville area. This includes Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Fisk University, Nashville Tech, Trevecca Nazarene University, and Nashville State Community College [http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vuband/ensembles.html] . The band performs at all Vanderbilt Commodores home football games as well as select away games.

During the spring semester, a 50-piece pep band is formed for performance at Vanderbilt men's and women's basketball games [http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vuband/basketball.html] while a smaller, 30-piece pep band called "Encorps" is formed to perform a marching indoor halftime show for the basketball games and other community events [http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vuband/encorps.html] .
