The road starts out heading east (although signed North/South), crossing the San Bernard River and makes a north and northeast turn, passing by several riverside neighborhoods. The road then heads to the east, then making a sharp turn to the north, then a slight northwest to north curve, then then taking another sharp turn to the east, coming to a T-intersection at State Highway 36 two miles south of West Columbia. FM 522 doesn't travel through any town but marks the northern unofficial border of unincorporated Wild Peach Village.

The speed limit along the entire route is fifty miles-an-hour, and all curves have been recently given a 30 mile an hour suggested speed as now posted below the curve sign. A two mile stretch between FM 1459 and County Road 353 is known as Blacksferry Road.
