The TAGIBook initiative, based in
Jordan , aims to introduce an affordable basiccomputer for everyArab citizen, in an effort to increase the level ofcomputer literacy in theArab region, bridge thedigital divide between theArab countries and thedeveloped world , and build sufficientICT skills and capacity to boost the economic standing of the region and steer it towards a knowledge-based and innovation driven society. TAGIBook initiative targets the basicArab user whether at home,school ,university ,urban orrural regions.The TAGIBook initiative, along with other social TAG projects such as community Knowledge Society (TAGKS); aims at increasing
literacy levels throughout theArab world and providing the targetpopulation witheducation and future opportunities based on hard work and merit.The value of this project is that it does not resemble traditional
computer projects, which are present in a number ofArab countries, the difference is that this project specifically addresses the needs of Arab communities, and merges four main components:hardware ,software ,connectivity , andtraining . These characteristics result in making this computer project unique in theworld .Objectives
The
hardware system will be manufactured at low cost to be affordable forArab communities. This is important since the current prices ofhardware , available in theArab markets, surpass the purchasing power for manyArab citizens. The system to be developed will utilize free basic applications with opensource code . It will work towards adopting a package of free applications and supporting theirArabization to meet the local needs. TAGorg will also provide connectivity solution to the educational institutions in order to connect the low cost computers to the centralized databases and benefit frome-learning solutions. In addition,training sessions will be offered based on the freesoftware ande-learning solutions adopted by theorganization . This will help the new emergingArab generations to benefit from the most advanced learning tools and techniques.In an area of the
world experiencing radical and unprecedented change, TAGorg is well aware of all aspects of theeconomic ,educational , and environmentaldevelopment , including thesocial and regulatory factors governing them by:*Providing low cost computers, while taking into account the different needs of the
Arab communities.
*Developingsoftware packages for basic applications ande-learning solutions.
*Arabtizing basicOpen Source applications.
*Establishing atrust fund for promotingcomputer literacy in theArab region.
*Assisting medium and small-sizedenterprises (M/SMEs) in customizing bothhardware andsoftware to meet their needs. It is worth mentioning that an M/SME Toolbox has been developed in joint collaboration between (TAGorg) and theUnited Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – Information and Communication Technology for Development in the Arab Region (ICTDAR) Program.
*Working with existing local and national charities and educational programs to help in delivering offers to those most in need.
*Working withgovernment officials to get the endorsement for the initiative and make available resources deemed necessary for it on local levels.
*Making available extendedtraining and support programs through social initiatives and providing long-term goals and a way forward for program participants (certification , work training program, etc.)
*Conducting a wide campaign for promotingcomputer literacy in theArab world, through TAGorg offices and alliances.ee also
